How to Get Accurate Test Results With a Digital Viscosity Meter?

Viscosity testing forms one of the vital methods for checking the quality of materials. Different industries count on performing viscosity checks of their materials to manufacture products with consistent texture. When it comes to the production control of materials and the development of new products, many crucial parameters are directly related to the product’s viscosity. The viscosity of the material has a significant impact in almost all production stages. Using a digital viscosity meter is the best option when it comes to determining the viscosity of different samples. Digital viscometers are suitable for testing the viscosity of liquids and semi-solid samples.

A majority of the digital viscometers have specifications that promise high test accuracy and repeatability. However, an instrument cannot guarantee accurate results on its own. Using the correct test parameters and instrument set-up are the essential aspects. A common question asked by digital viscometer users is how to get accurate test results. Let’s delve deeper to get an answer.

Considerations for Accurate Viscosity Testing Using a Digital Viscosity Meter

Quality control and product development are the two factors that determine viscosity testing.

1.     Quality control testing: If the quality control test displays the product’s viscosity exceeding its normal range, you might be wondering if there’s anything wrong with the product or if the digital viscosity meter is malfunctioning. To get solution to your problem, you can take the following steps:

Find out if the flow is non-turbulent and the test conditions are similar to the tests conducted previously. You can save the test conditions for future use if your viscometer is capable of doing so. If not, make a list having all the test conditions to be used for each product you will be testing.

During the testing, if the product is hotter or colder than the room temperature, a temperature control accessory might be necessary. It helps you to maintain a consistent temperature for each test you carry out.

If you’re using an SNB-2 viscometer and the test parameters remained consistent in the previous tests, depending on the capabilities of your instrument, you can run a zero setting if the viscometer has the capability. The zero setting is nearly like the ‘re-set’ button.

Still getting a different result? Use standard calibration oil and follow the calibration procedure of the viscometer.

Once you know it’s not the instrument’s fault, you’re assured that the anomaly in the test result is because of the product itself and you can take the appropriate action to solve the problem.

2.   Product development: Like quality control testing, ensuring non-turbulent flow and uniform conditions during testing are significant in the product development stage. You might not always know the test parameters when you’re doing research and development. For each parameter, here are some of the things you can consider:

Temperature: Viscosity is affected by changes in temperature. You might want to maintain a continuous temperature for testing your product in development the same way you do while carrying out quality control checks in the production line.

Spindle: Whether you need a coaxial, anchor, cylinder, disc or bob type of spindle, it depends on your product. Most spindles are available in various sizes and each size conforms to a particular viscosity range.

Speed: If the fluid doesn’t flow when it’s not under the influence of any forces, avoid maintaining a fast speed so that no hole is created in the product surrounding the spindle.

Time of the test: Suppose you’re using SNB 1 viscometer. Unless you have a product that reacts after the spindle has been turned for a particular amount of time, you need to operate the viscometer for a minute or two. If time is not a consideration for your viscosity testing, you can consider anywhere between 20 seconds and 2 minutes as a suitable time span.
